A new must-read is the book, “Promote Yourself: The New Rules for Career Success,” by Dan Schwabel who is the founder of Millenial Branding, There are 6 Rules of Self-Promotion he discusses that everyone can benefit from in managing their career:
1. Make yourself worth being talked about, but in a good way
2. Be well-known for one specific thing, i.e. your passion or area of expertise
3. Take responsibility for your achievements, without overly bragging about them
4. Find ways to expand your role within the organization – volunteer or take on bigger projects
5. Make others look good
6. Get some, what he calls ‘evangelists’ – people who can give you glowing testimonials; as he states, “what others say about you is more impactful than what you say about yourself.”
I love what Schwabel says: “The bottom line is that average is over…The antidote to average is to do one thing every day – add a skill, make a new contact, share an innovative idea with your colleagues – that will advance your visibility and career opportunities.”
This book is spot-on in addressing the new way of work today. If you want to be one of the high-performers then this a book to add to your professional library.
