What is a Brand and Why You Need One

Are you memorable? If you were to walk into a meeting or a room, would something about you come to their mind? Having a brand is needed in this day and age. Essentially, a brand is something that identifies you, such as a name, a product or service, a color or other distinguishing identifier.

I met a woman in a networking group and she always either wore a hat or a ladybug pin; someone else was known by their favorite color, which they wore in their clothes, their nail polish, and it went to their website. There are others who are known by their product or service – Apple and Nike come to mind.

A brand is needed by everyone, in my opinion, but especially if you are in a career or a business as it will keep you at the top of someone’s mind if they need help (solve a problem or give a resource) or if an opportunity arises (expertise).

However, “a brand is not something you create – it is the result of what you do.” This is according to my friend, Jennifer, who is a great graphic artist and branding expert. I love her explanation which makes so much sense. You can have a great logo, wear the colors or have good graphics but they aren’t going to get you the results you want unless you are creating value to others.

That is what makes you memorable so that now people want to hire you, to buy your products or services, and to spread the news about you. It is what leads to interest and memorability. It is what will bring you more success. This week will focus on branding and how to create one, so stay tuned. Coaching question: what do you want to be remembered or known for? What type of value can you create that will lead to it?
